The Challenge | A Major New Festival in the Heart of the City
Created by BRANDLIVE and launched in 2018, SKOOKUM Festival brought together the best of local music, food, and art – plus international headliners Florence and the Machine and The Killers – in the majestic setting of Vancouver’s Stanley Park. The BRANDLIVE team worked to transform the Brockton Field complex into a wonderland of creative discovery and west coast influence for 3 days in early September, featuring 4 stages, restaurant pop-ups, a craft beer and wine zone, long table dinners, artisan vendors and an art pavilion.
The Strategy | World Class Entertainment with a Sustainable Future
Set in Stanley Park on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, BRANDLIVE’s planning embraced a sustainability mandate that included close consultation with First Nations and a partnership with Ocean Wise Life as their first ever Event Partner. This relationship resulted in 30% Indigenous programming across the festival’s four stages, and the establishment of core sustainability mandates that will continue to grow and involve year over year. SKOOKUM is proud of the successful ban of single-use plastic water bottles and straws on-site, along with exclusive use of 100% compostable food and beverage materials, and looks forward to expanding these initiatives year over year.
The Impact | A Kick-Ass Festival with Purpose
Welcoming over 50,000 attendees over three event days, SKOOKUM embraced the challenge of creating a notable event property in a much-loved public location. A strong sustainability mandate paired with highly curated programming resulted in a true one-of-a-kind festival, fusing world-class entertainment with an authentic West Coast experience that honoured its location and history while showcasing the best in contemporary music, food, and art.
