The Challenge
A half century young

Taking place exactly 50 years after the University first opened it’s doors, SFU’s Anniversary Party was held in Freedom Square, an iconic promenade on the University campus. BRANDLIVE was tasked to produce an event that would celebrate this history, whilst launching this education institution into the next 50 years of success.

The Strategy

Celebrating research and innovation

To embody the University’s contemporary culture, the afternoon festivities were live-streamed to celebrations at each of the SFU satellite campuses. Onsite activations included the opportunity for attendees to write in a giant birthday card, leave messages for future staff and students, and take photos with 1960s props in memory of the first days of SFU. After heartfelt speeches from staff and alumni the new school anthem was debuted as a fusion dance performance took place.

The evening “Celebrate and Savour” event was hosted by SFU alumnus Christopher Gaze, the Artistic Director of Bard on the Beach, to a sold out courtyard of 2,100 guests. This interactive food festival featured the greatest chefs and culinary experts from Metro Vancouver and a fusion performance from SFU’s Pipe Band, Bollywood dancers and Aboriginal drummers. The evening was topped off by a performance from Bend Sinister, a fireworks display and a projection mapping show that lit up the venue.

The Impact
Investing in the future

With a longstanding history of research and innovation, the 50th Anniversary Party for SFU marked a longstanding reputation for creating positive change in British Columbia communities and beyond. Through creating unique, varied, and participant oriented event activations, BRANDLIVE was able to bring this sentiment to life for SFU educators, alumni, as well as students of today and the future.
